I just found out the hard way that there's a limit to the length of private messages!

I wrote a verrrrrry long reply, happily clicked sent, and then realized that the last third of it was cut off

Could there be a "no. of characters left" ticker when writing PMs, so that users don't get a nasty surprise like that? Or at least some sort of alert to let users know the message is/was too long.

I only found out when I clicked on the sent message and saw that it was truncated.
I'm kinda like ARRGH now trying to rewrite everything!

I wasn't aware that there was a limit, but I just checked it appears to be set at 2k characters. Sorry to have lost you part of your message!

If this is a issue for a lot of users, we can increase the size of the private messaging database.  I'm reluctant to spend too much time on this though, since we're planning on swapping out our private message engine at some point... the current version is a bit kludge-y!

no worries, i don't usually write that much anyway, but it was an unusual circumstance.

i'll look forward to the new interface then. (p/s: i'm loving the new photo upload interface for bios!)
